The transition to democracy epitomized by the US constitution is one from tribal organization to rational distribution of power by the ballot box. But this kind of arrangement is always at odds with the more 'natural' human tendency to organize by families and connections. You could read the whole history of American democracy as one in which a powerful oligarchy composed of connected families, successful entrepeneurs and military industrialists has struggled to circumvent the imposition of democratic proceedures and grab the power for themselves. The influence of lobbyists, the high cost of elections, and the control of the media by a few rich men are the most obvious pieces of evidence. Will the good guys win? Not likely in my view.
